Membrane keyboards consist of a membrane compound composed of at least four layers of film. Polyester membranes with thicknesses from 0.10 mm to 0.25 mm are used as decorative membranes. The individual layers are bonded and separated by polyester substrates - coated on both sides with acrylic adhesives - in thicknesses of between 0.05 mm and 0.30 mm. The membrane keyboard circuit is either applied to polyester membranes by screen printing using polymer pastes with a high silver content, or as a PCB.
When using a membrane circuit, it is possible to overprint non-conductive parts of the circuit with a UV-curing insulation coating. In this manner, bridges (comparable to plated through holes on printed circuit boards) can also be implemented. The adhesive film is applied as the final layer. This can be individually adapted to the application and the housing material.
